Happened to be reading ASW yesterday while writing someone a letter about my childhood (argh), which I sometimes look back on and wonder if I could have handled better.

I think it's kind of freeing, along with grim/pragmatic. When you're young and small you're really pretty helpless. Acting in a different way might've been nice and maybe not, and sure a kid can trick themselves into thinking the world is on their shoulders, but ultimately the kid acting differently is unlikely to change a situation.
Adults are so much bigger.
