Closing time... sing it with me...

every new beginning comes from some other beginning's end.

Finally, finally... we closed this morning on the condo. It was all fine and friendly and smooth. Thanks to Tuesday's weather forecasts I had some definite fears that HLM's flight home from San Diego would be delayed and he wouldn't be there for the closing, but the predicted blizzard never materialized and he got in just an hour late. Final stats: two hours, 47 signatures, 17 initialings... most of that being for the bank, not the sellers... and then they gave us the keys! Woo hoo! There was one tiny thing that wasn't as we expected--we thought we'd be paying half a point on the larger of the two loans (the 80% of purchase price one) and there was no such half-point on the final paperwork. It's something we might have caught earlier, but just didn't notice. So we're probably--nay, definitely--paying about a 1/8 percent higher interest rate than we would have gotten with the half-point in there. Oh well. We can still just take that money and apply it to the loan's principal right away, or hang onto it and use it for fixing the place up. This was a screwup and it will matter over time, but it'll take a few years before it matters. There's no reason to lose sleep over it now, especially since interest rates have gone up since we locked anyway (and thus there's nothing at all to be done about it anyway).

So... we're homeowners. Homeowners! Yay, and thank god it's over with. I know the story's just beginning, because we do want to do quite a lot to the place, but that part sounds fun to me. Doing things to it every now and then should keep it feeling new and exciting for a long time, and anyway we won't be on anyone else's schedule. So, the worst/hardest thing left is finding someone to take this apartment, which hasn't happened yet. But we'll have more collective brain cells free to work on that now that the condo stuff is finalized.

Oh yes, and we're moving on Saturday. I'm almost entirely packed, and HLM is close to done also (plus he has all day tomorrow). So that part should go fine... except for having no internet connection at the new place until Tuesday, which is a little barbaric. But I imagine we'll survive. And now I'm off to pack a few more of the fragile things from the walls that go in the "I'm fragile, please hand-carry me" box.
