Avoirdupois

I woke up dreaming about the word avoirdupois (in my dream I was trying to remember what it meant). Typing it into dictionary.com a minute ago I had myself half convinced that I just dreamed it and it wasn't a word. But it is! I wonder when I learned it and why my subconscious dug it up last night.

Have you ever read Calvino's Six Memos for the Next Millenium? They discuss his favorite characteristics of great literature- 'Lightness,' 'Quickness,' 'Exactitude,' 'Visibility,' 'Multiplicity.' They're really cool, and use some fabulous metaphors. You'll never look at Perseus and Medusa the same way again.

Being the pretentious literary sort, I would interpret your dream as a sign that you need to read the essay on lightness. :-) Alternately, that you've been enjoying holiday cookies.
