It might be too early for this...

but I was reading some posts and some news about how much Katrina has
temporarily hurt US oil production. I can't help thinking that this is
good news, in terms of making it obvious just how dependent the
country is on oil. This may provide a much-needed boost to funding for
(and interest in) alternative energy sources.

And perhaps at the least encourage folks to take public transportation or get a motorcycle (can we say 40-70 mpg?).

As far as alternative energy goes, if we had put a FRACTION of the amount of money spent on fusion over the years into solar energy, it would probably be a viable, inexpensive option now.

Speaking of which, have you run into solar cookers?

I agree whole-heartedly. I'm planning on taking the T to work again. As you remember, I used to do that, before I bought a new, fuel efficient car.

I agree, definitely a bright side. That and the housing bubble should bring Bush down...bring Bush down....bring Bush down....everybody now...
