Priorities

This week: I forgot to watch the lunar eclipse, and I ran a mile on the treadmill for the first time in many months.

Friday was moving day for our office, so I ended up basically not working, and running around town instead. In the morning I had a training session with the Leaning Tower in the gym, and algorithms class, and then stopped by work to finish packing. I used the free afternoon to pick out new glasses and get a massage, and today I followed up those bits of self-care with dropping my totally shredded coat off at the dry cleaner's to get relined.

A note on such things: in my experience, it's almost as draining and depressing to live with half-broken things all around you as it is to live with not enough money. When you don't have money, it's pretty easy to say all your stuff is shabby because you don't have money; but the truth is, if you have money but no time it's just as easy to wind up with a tattered coat, warped glasses, creaking doors all through the house and a refrigerator with no groceries in it.

My glasses, especially, had become a nightly reminder to me that I can't seem to take care of myself these days. The ones I loved on Friday, by contrast, are so trendy and European-looking that I may start wearing them out to coffee shops and brunch places just for the hell of it. I also liked a more normal pair very similar to the ones I helped Chia pick out a few months ago... but getting both pairs would cost me a lot more, so my plan is to be daring and get only the edgy ones. I mean, so what if they make me feel like wearing clogs and smoking? They look great on me, and if they go out of style I'll just go back to wearing glasses for 5 minutes at night.

I'm convinced that the small things we experience daily are the opposite of trivial. We should surround ourselves with beauty, take risks, pet cats, fix something squeaky every week and not be satisfied with crappy lives. At least, when work isn't crazy.

not be satisfied with crappy lives.

This is so true. I find when I just decide, even if it inconveniences me, to fix something that is shabby, or even replace it, I feel better.

Pictures with awesome glasses, please. :)

If you haven't already picked a moving buddy, FIND ONE!

I just happen to catch the lunar eclipse while taking the dog out. Blood red moon with a sliver of light along one side.

I concur, I want to see Flexy, the 'Aristocat.'

BRAVO on such a successful take-care-of-myself-for-a-change day!! We all need these, much more often than we give them to ourselves. Can't wait to see the new frames!

Which is why people end up hiring people to do all that crap for them, IF they have enough money. Man I miss having cleaning people. How sad is that given that I life in a toothpaste cap?

Anyway, great post.

I feel like that would lead to a disciplined, tidy life, except of course when it wouldn't, in which case there'd be a mess.

InDEED.

I am buying absurd pink and white Judy Jetsonesque cateyes ASAP. I am really so pleased by this idea.

Absolutely.

Also, for now, I will just send you a link to my awesome glasses.
