Tripping

Hurricane Irene messed up my trip more than I thought remotely possible -- and "remotely" is a good adverb when you're talking about Montana. I've now gone 1200 miles out of my way, and am 3100 miles away from where I really want to be.

Basically, it turns out you can't fly into Boston at the same time a hurricane is flying into Boston, and the airlines are so backed up that it got us home faster to fly from Montana to San Francisco. This solution also lets us work for a couple of days (while getting our hotel and, probably, our return flight paid for by Zillian). Business trip powers, activate! Aside from being in complete shock at finding myself in CA, it's okay... that is, it's okay now, knowing that the storm has gone through, and our condo and the kitties are okay. I was worried about both those things.

The visit to Montana itself was probably the best yet. My dad and his wife were both in good spirits, and nothing triggered my "rat in a cage" reactions too badly, and they loved the Kindle we gave them. They practiced buying books, and asked lots of questions, and learned how to highlight passages, and started mock-fighting over it and saying they were going to have to buy another. So, yay! It's good to get a gift idea totally right. It's also good to float in a raft down a river in Glacier Park.

I would MUCH rather have been in town for the storm though. Ouch, ouch, ouch. I can't believe I missed it, and I hate when I can't get home. After the next two cross-country trips (one each in the next two months), I'm seriously considering trying not to travel for a year. It seems impossible I could get away with such decadence, but maybe I could tell people I'd taken a vow or something. The heavy travel schedule has been probably the worst thing about 2011 so far.

Your post title, while technically accurate, seems misleading to me.

Welcome to cold dry San Francisco!
