So, at last our story has a verifiably happy ending: at 7:30 last night HLM saw the little critter head up the column (apparently this took several tries), sit in the drainpipe kink for a minute, spot the newly installed ramp and head for home. He immediately went out and took down the whole contraption so that home is where it would stay, and this morning I let the cats back out on the porch. It's all over. Yay. :)

Yesterday afternoon I got my windows profile corrupted irrevocably, with much loss of productivity and talking to the sysadmin (and missing that upper body lifting workout) associated. Sighhhhh... so today I expect to get basically nothing done.

Last night I went and had dinner with this girl MK who went I to college with, and who's been starting businesses since senior year. She told me a few useful tidbits, but most interesting is that she's getting out of the local tech startup scene entirely because people are so evil and cutthroat... she's now moving to Cali to start a self-financing (read: no venture capitalists needed) adventure in retail. Interesting... interesting. There are really quite a few ways to get going on one's own. The retail thing, the landlord thing, the freelance writer or calligrapher or masseuse or whatever thing. HLM doesn't like the idea of retail, but I'd do it if I had a good idea for a store. Actually, I do have a good idea for a store... A good new bookstore near where I live should be able to make a killing. Unoriginal, huh? :) But if the rest of tech is as evil as my current CEO... I just might do it. :b
