Got me some ducks in a nice little row
Oct. 2nd, 2003 10:45 amWhy do I want them in a row, anyway? So I can shoot them all with one bullet or something? But I wouldn't shoot the nice duckies. At any rate, I used some of my slacker time yesterday afternoon to apply for a Roth IRA, and this morning I faxed in all the forms... something I would have done in, like, '99, if I hadn't been under the misapprehension that I couldn't have any form of IRA as long as I was in my company's 403(b) plan. Well, that turned out to be untrue, girls and boys, that rule is just for a traditional IRA, so Roth-time it is. That extra-special $3000 can now huddle in its little tax shelter toasting marshmallows and listening to the tax drumming pleasantly on the roof.
For a follow-up act I also filled out the form to make HLM the beneficiary of my 403(b) in the case of my death, my mother now being the contingent beneficiary in the case of both our deaths. Filling out all the forms definitely made the marriage thing hit home a bit more... my status? MARRIED. Relationship of beneficiary? HUSBAND (or the box marked "spouse"). Freakishly enough, on both the benefit-related things I did, if you are married and you designate someone other than your spouse as beneficiary, they have to sign to give you permission to leave your money to that person. Yipes. My independence gave a frightened snort & quiver at that one, let me tell you--even though in both cases I wanted to leave it to HLM anyway.
