I went to modern dance class for the second time on Thursday, with [livejournal.com profile] heisenbug. I did way better than the first week. There will, alas, be no turning upside down and no lifting other people in this class -- nothing so playful. In fact, a lot of the moves we're doing are lifted from ballet. Still, there are insights -- for example, in the first class the teacher explained that when slowly moving our arms we should be resisting our own motion with the opposing muscles. "Otherwise you're just moving the bones," she said, and my head filled with images of the bones lifting and leaving gelid tubes of muscle and skin and fat behind them. (She says a lot of kooky things.) Still, this is different from yoga in which we aim for graceful movement without unnecessary effort. So the second week I focused on that antagonist action, and also on looking happily outward instead of down.

I walked to the farmer's market for the second time this weekend. It was better than last week as well, maybe because not everyone sets up their booths at 9 AM sharp when I was there last time (though on the other hand, the booth where I bought most of my veggies last time was mostly sold out). This time there was homemade soap and organic bacon to be had, as well as the salad greens, and summer squashes are starting to come in. It's neat to start learning what's in season when. Last week is when I realized that strawberries and rhubarb come into season at the same time, and that's why strawberry rhubarb pie is a traditional recipe and not some fancy-pants thing whipped up by a fusion chef. It's obvious in retrospect -- strawberries and rhubarb are both pretty perishable -- but it's not something I ever thought of before.

Yesterday [livejournal.com profile] heisenbug and I painted our bedroom for the second time. This time it's very flat paint in dark red. After one coat it looked like Johnny the Homicidal Maniac had spent some time in there having fun; after two coats it looked like the inside of a giant devil's food cake; after two and a half coats it started to look pretty good. Sadly, there are parts of the walls that need yet another coat. I knew that dark red is notorious for needing a lot of coats, but I think next time we go from a light wall to a dark wall we'll try a coat of dark gray primer as a base coat. It would probably have helped.

I also took Nala to the vet for, like, the 10th time. Luckily for you, this long and operatic tale does not fit the theme of this post.
