We're back from a fully sold-out Joan Baez concert at Harvard (interview with her). I actually had forgotten that when I first heard of this I insisted that we buy tickets, and so it wasn't on my calendar and I hadn't even been looking forward to it until yesterday.
It must be nice to have "legend" status. Joan got a standing ovation for walking out onto the stage, and when she was tired of it she quieted the audience in about 2 seconds by singing a phrase or two into the microphone. She played and sang a lot of new stuff, some of it a bit more religious than I was comfortable with, but also some oldies that I knew from listening to my mother's old records when I was growing up. She had us sing along with the choruses of a couple of songs, including "Imagine" (or watch this one for some surprises... Imagine). And after all that, after the first last song and the ovation and two encore songs, she sang "Amazing Grace" a capella, and swept her arms to invite the whole audience join her. Did I tear up a bit, perhaps? Maybe you have to understand that she comprises some of my earliest really happy memories, stuff my mom used to play when I was little and my dad was away. And it was dim, and almost definitely something that will never happen again, and so many people singing such a pretty, simple song.
All of which is to say, I sang with Joan Baez!!! My mother is going to turn viridian when I tell her about this.
