Dear LJ,

keeping up with personal email kind of sucks. I keep putting in all the effort of a medium-good blog post, often writing on topics I don't really feel like writing about, and yet it's only going to one person at a time. Seems unfair, no? I have the moral high ground now for sure (one starred email, and that one is less than 24 hours old), not to mention concrete plans for next weekend and plane tickets to see some of my family, and all that hovering guilt has been expunged (hurray!), but the cost has been pretty high in terms of time and willpower.

Having a sore throat also sucks... I skipped another workout today in hopes that resting will get rid of it. Perhaps it's H1N1.

The US Treasury has sent us a check for $2600, with no letter. No justification at all. The thing looks VERY official, watermark and all, and is in an envelope marked "penalty for private use $300", so I don't think it's a scam, but why on earth...? My only hint is the text "ANDOVERTAX REFUND" on the check, Andover being memorable as the Massachusetts town we used to mail our tax forms to in pre-TurboTax days. I'm gonna take it to the bank tomorrow and ask them a) if they know of any current scams along these lines and b) if they can tell if it's real. Then hopefully c) I can deposit it. It's likely enough that we just made a mistake on our taxes, but my scam sensors are on alert after all the crap we got right after our refinance (mostly stuff claiming to be Super Official Mortgage Info but trying to sell us mortgage protection plans).

Update: I took it to the bank, where they were able to check it with a UV reader. It's real! And deposited! Woot...

Lastly, I am displeased to find that my doctor's appointment tomorrow is out in the boonies. Why would a nice urban medical center have an outpost sooooo far in the boonies? Screw you, nice urban medical center, now I have to pay for a taxi. Still, I'm expecting it to be an interesting visit, something I expect to write more about when I have a little more information.

Update: Achieved boonie on time only to find out that I was in the wrong town. Argh! Automated phone system, I shake my fist at you! They were able to fit me in this afternoon (in Boston) so it all works out, at the cost of a teeth cleaning. Good thing for them I was taking today off anyway, or I'd be steamed like a clam.
