There and back again.
Jul. 21st, 2012 08:21 pmWell, that business trip kind of kicked my ass. Between the "how shall we run this team?" discussions with other team leads and the "this is how a bunch of stuff works" discussions with a brand-new Zillianaire who started last week on my new team, and the catch-ups with my three primary friends who work at the Mothership, it was all talk and no technical progress. Tiring. And then there were the usual small indignities of travel, like losing a pencil case that contained some cosmetics and my nail clippers and file. (My nails were in a bad state by the time I got home.)
I did squirm out of my remaining obligations to the interim team I was on, so now at least I'm 100% on my new thing. And, terrifyingly, that brand-new employee is going to be reporting to me immediately. I am someone's boss. o_O
Normally I'd have spent the plane flight making up for lost productivity, but the wifi sucked too much to work. The weekend would be the next resort, but it is weirdly booked. Not sure that much work is going to happen until Monday night. At least I did a bunch of the things one does in the context of "As soon as I get home, I'm going to XYZ and then I'll feel sooo much better." I also bought new sneakers (having left the old ones in CA to be donated somewhere), ordered a new pencil case and re-bought the stuff that was in the one I lost. And earrings from my favorite artist at ArtBeat... it was actually an expensive sort of day.
I noticed a lot of human kindness on this trip. My new boss invited all the team leads over to his house and made us dinner; one of my co-leads gave everyone small jars of homemade apricot jam; two different friends provided car rides and dinners, although I have to give the most props to the ones who also gave me a kitten to snuggle with all night. Mmmm, kitten. Kitten kitten kitten. ^_^ Thank you, friends.
