I've spent the last seven days away from home. First Philadelphia, for a two-day handbalancing and movement workshop with Yuri Marmerstein, and a delicious day of hanging out with Stencil. Then on to Chicago for a 3.5 day work summit. I didn't get sick, and I slept a lot.

Although I hate being away from home, it was a HUGE relief to get away from circus school feelings for a while. Yuri's workshop was scattered and unstructured and un-pressurey, and left me with a couple of resolutions and reminders of good exercises (and one nice discovery: on a soft floor, I can do a full butterfly squat). Strangely, I was the only woman there, perhaps because the organizer was kind of a bro who probably reached out to all his bro-ey friends first. It was nice to be in the middle of the pack in terms of ability and confidence and stuff. Still, I stood out in one more way, which is that I was the one getting beat up. The guy who organized it, who is on the reckless side, managed to kick my arm on his way down from a handstand in a way that jammed my thumb. Then 10 minutes later someone knocked down a plywood "Dance" sign from high on the wall, where it fell onto my hand as I was minding my own business in a wall handstand. Stayed in the handstand. Gained reputation as a badass for staying in handstand; tarnished new reputation immediately by demanding a band-aid for my skinned-up hand.

Also, at lunch the conversation turned to straddle pancake work. I said I had a good before-and-after showing the effects of two particular exercises. When I showed it to the guys we were with, they both exclaimed "oh this video! I've seen this video! That's you?" Hee hee, small world, and also I am internet famous.

Scheduling all the training I'd like to do is difficult, especially when I'm still continuing some partner work, but... well... better this problem than running out of interests. I tried to bring in even more new ideas by setting up a handbalancing lesson in Chicago; the teacher flaked so I just worked on my own for a bit. Perhaps just as well -- I've been recovering from some kind of nerve-pinch injury that I incurred last Monday, during my utterly shitty last lesson with Panther.

The Pokemon in Philadelphia definitely showed up in a different mix than in Boston. Chicago had almost exactly the same mix as Boston, but the hotel was far from the office, so I walked several miles/day and hatched a LOT of eggs. I'm now Level 25 and have finally caught up to my boss. Total new Pokemon for trip: wild-caught Diglett, Alakazam, Tangela, and Omanyte. Evolved Sandslash, Electrode, and Exeggutor.

Irony of life: it's hard to actually work on a business trip. Still, I had some good meetings, and only fell one day behind on my short-term queue-based tasks. And I kind of love that they ran both a hackathon and a foosball/ping-pong "biathlon", even though I didn't participate in the last one.
