flexagon: (begin each day)
Last weekend was weird and lacking in downtime, although there was good stuff in it (Lots of Pokemon Go with Norwood followed by an overnight, and baking this incredible cherry pie from scratch: a first for me). It was supposed to include my flight on the Vomit Comet, but it didn't, because the flight cancelled and I'm now rescheduling. In general I feel a little discombobulated and off my usual schedule.

I finished The Crimson Petal and the White, and I'm so glad I didn't read it when it came out... it really is gorgeous and kaleidoscopic, but the adultery factor is off the charts and literally every character's life is miserable. I could read it this year because the whole thing, in a universe of scant medical knowledge and where nobody is really giving informed consent, seemed almost like science fiction in its refusal to fit with my worldview. That said, Sugar the prostitute is a great character, and there's a new book of short stories set in that universe: The Apple. I'll probably read it.

As for the pie, it turns out that the secret to pie crust is temperature. It's hard to keep something down between 65 and 70 degrees in a kitchen in the summer, so this turned into a bit of a dexterity / speed game involving intermittent refrigeration and a lot of ice cubes in a ziploc bag. But much folding of crust later, the result is indeed perfect, and I can imagine making 2 or 3x the recipe on some crisp fall morning to put in the freezer for later. Not as easily as I can imagine buying, pitting and freezing a whole bunch of cherries, though, because using this thing is intensely satisfying.

A few days ago I had some poly stuff in mind to write about (Norwood wanting to date more new people; a vague and general note of advice to the universe about not dating angsty ex-Christians) but it all feels muted now, perhaps because I got to finish out the weekend with a nice and zero-drama threesome. (Yes, my period stopped in time. And no, it wasn't the Atherton Twins.) Sometimes I feel a bit trapped in my polysaturation, just trying to keep my usual setup held together while everyone else pines for more adventures, and in that context the occasional adventure of my own can be oddly calming.

Oh, yipes, and I almost messed up my life by forgetting about signups for circus school, and getting to registration 24 heart-stopping minutes late. Miraculously it all worked out; I have my usual classes.
