Last night I went to see Flea, the financial advisor I hired last year to deal with my retirement savings, and get my annual update. Turns out it was a good year (ok, stellar), and Flea is very excited about some things that happened while I was looking the other way and thinking about how annoying my hamstring is. But what I really wanted to tell you about Flea is that he showed me some of the software they use to track clients' progress... and on the screen showing the long view for retirement, there is a checkbox called "Social Security". The checkbox means: for this client shall we assume that Social Security will still exist when they retire? He says he unchecks the box for everyone he sees who's under 45.

Dear leaders of the economy, Social Security was started at a time when half of everyone DIED before they could start getting payouts! If people started living longer and the population grew and you didn't adjust the age upward, what did you bloody expect would happen to my generation? Sincerely, [livejournal.com profile] flexagon.
