New handstand notions
Dec. 21st, 2014 11:05 amTwo new notions I've been playing with lately.
First, I got a cool drill from the very small handbalancing coach who I have no name for. Lie on your back, bend the knees very slightly, tuck your pelvis under as far as it will go... press down with your heels. Now, try to lift your head and shoulders as if to sit up (you can't go very far). The muscles working are the ones to use in straddle jumps and presses.
Second, I had a really fascinating handbalancing lesson, which I posted about on FB with a picture and many comments. It's basically all about scapular position in handstands, and may finally explain why I have wussy little serratus anterior. I haven't been protracting (except by accident, or... when doing scap pushups, which I guess is what those are all about). SIGH. I hate when I finally understand something, and I look back and see all the different ways people/coaches have given me hints or tried to tell me something really related and I just didn't get it quite in the way I needed to.
It should be crushingly depressing that I didn't get my press this year, and in a way it is, but I'm also continuing to learn things that seem so basic and fundamental that of course I wouldn't have such an advanced move yet.
Love learning, hate how slowly I learn.
