flexagon | Dreaming as the days go by, dreaming as the summers die

A week ago Tuesday, talking with

norwoodbridge, it struck me how very many real-life experiences could be described just as if they were dreams, and how they WOULD seem weird, and how any listener would nod at the final, philosophical "dreams are so weird, man."

Example: I was walking with this guy over near MIT, by the river, and we turned to walk along the path. Everything was fine, it was a nice night out. Gradually I started to notice spiders along the fence between us and the river, which I ignored. After a while there was another shorter fence between us and the road, and somehow without my noticing it the spiders got incredibly unrealistically dense along both fences. We walked past a lamp post that must have had eight giant orb webs attached, and I kind of freaked out and froze in the middle of the path. But after a few minutes we kept walking, and gradually it became okay again somehow.

Example continued: so then I was at dinner with this same guy, and I had never heard the names of any of the drinks on the menu. And I guess I was dating him, somehow... but it was somehow okay because

heisenbug knew about it? Huh. Anyway, we ordered octopus, and the tiles at this counter where we were sitting were SO BLUE and I just kept staring at them for a long time. (Dreams are so weird.)

Example: I dreamed this guy at the gym asked me out, so I wrote to him. He didn't write back, so I wrote him a week later to tell him "no date". His responses to my second email got weirdly desperate as he claimed to have not gotten the first one... and I dreamed I was sitting in this shawarma place, sending an email telling him we should both just cut our losses, and listening to my phone chime as he wrote back again and again. He started asking me all these weird favors, culminating in Please help me find a tall slim white girlfriend. What was THAT about, brain? Nobody would really do that.
