A passion of the flexagon

I forgot to mention that I got about 5/6ths of the way through my new issue of Dwell magazine last night before I started seriously wondering how to become involved in urban planning. Talk about a field I could be passionate about! Talk also about a field that could easily be riddled with politics and bogged down with stereotypical city workers. In two years, if accepted, I could get a master's in urban planning from MIT... but I have to wonder, don't city planners sometimes hire software engineers anyway? Someone has to model traffic flow on the new bridges and all that.

Anyone know any city planners? I only know one, and unfortunately he doesn't talk to me anymore. Plus he worked way out in Peabody... which is another problem. I'd only want to work my wiles on a local city, and probably every other urban planner in the area wants to work here too. Grumph.

Even so, this is an interesting thought-train to stay on. I love the greater Boston area and would gleefully spend my working hours working with it, the physical city, if I could find a way. Real estate and architecture have both crossed my mind, as well, though I fear both markets are glutted with qualified people already and architecture's definitely a going-back-to-school proposition. There's always this... but, well, actually not. :)
