Creepy, geeky, yeasty

flexagon1) There are few things as annoying as a teeny tiny negligible little cut that refuses to stop bleeding for a long time. Behind the "oh, it's nothing" feeling is the creepy thought that even something as small as that could kill you--all it takes is time. Luckily, yesterday's bleeding finger met its match in 3M's NexCare technologies, yet another life was saved, and we now have yet another box of band-aids adhesive bandages.
2) My head is all full of geeky stuff from a book of essays I read over the weekend, a lot of which is online at the author's site. The first one has a damn decent explanation of why nerds are unpopular in high school. Check it out--do you think he's right? In my case he's only half right, because I was also really poor and that gave me some overlapping reasons, but whatever. It's a good essay. (In fact, most of his essays are good essays... he has me half convinced I need to run out and learn Lisp, pronto.)
3) Some fear notwithstanding, I have a sourdough starter that's 1.5 days old. It's sitting in the oven--the only place in the house that's in the recommended temperature range of 80 to 90 degrees--and goddamn, it smells yeasty. The yeastie beasties must really be munching up the flour.
I'm seeing glimmers of hope now that the end of January is finally in sight. There's something about this month that just never works for me--except of course for the fact that it ends, bringing February with its perfectly acceptable mix of lousy weather and romance.
