I was talking with a friend in tae kwon do last night, and she mentioned the extreme trouble she has saying no to anything or anyone. So (at her request) I started asking her questions, using her name, to which she would very firmly say no.

"Laura, will you come over to my place and cook me dinner?"
"No."
"Laura, will you give me a hundred dollars?"
"No."
"Laura, will you devote all your spare time to TKD for the rest of your life?"
"No."

After about four of those, she laughed out loud and said "That feels great!" and I felt like such a good little assertiveness trainer. :)

Later, this all made me think about the words I have trouble saying. I know what they are, of course... I am a child of the universe no less than the trees and the stars. I have a right to be here. Sure, I can type that. But to say it out loud? The right to be here? My throat freezes right up. Maybe some sunny morning when I'm at home and the bug is sleeping.

Do you have words you have trouble saying? Can you say mine out loud?

My worries have mercifully been loosening their grip on me, and I've been feeling creative. I have to fly to Virginia soon to show off the little GUI mockup I've been working on all week, and I'll be taking my sketchbook with me. It's time to draw comics again.
