Everything but the kitchen sink
Apr. 18th, 2005 06:09 pmWell, there went another weekend. Although I hardly got to sit down, I did buy a black leather jacket and that makes me very happy. I think I would have owned one for years at this point if it had ever crossed my mind before Saturday that I could afford one.
Yesterday morning I applied my mad mech skillz to my house for the first time in a long time when HLM and I attacked the job of dishwasher installation. (My experience with copper tubing at LANL came in handy--who would have guessed?) We got the electrical cord connected, the water intake all hooked up, the dishwasher itself in place and level... in fact, everything went well except the kitchen sink. That is when we found out that our cobbled-together system of little PVC pipes, which formed a nice J-bend under the sink, didn't have any threaded parts we could loosen to help us remove the piece of pipe we needed to remove. We also found out that PVC isn't quite flexible enough to let us simply bend that part to the side. Don't get me wrong, it did bend far enough several times. But on the fifth time or so, crack! The entire length of pipe, from the sink to the wall, came away in my hands, not only forcing us to give in and call a plumber but splattering me with disgusting goo. And that is how it came to pass that, far from listening peacefully to the thumpawhump of the dishwasher, I spent part of yesterday evening washing dishes in the bathroom sink. And that is also why the title of this post is the answer to the question so, what's functional in your house today, flexy?
We remain cheerful, however. We still saved money by not needing an electrician, and we got an education, and when this is over we'll have much better plumbing under the sink than we started out with.
As a final bit of news, T's offer from Politic Frog was good through today, and he's finally accepted. He sent a very funny email:
And it is lovely weather. Indeed, thanks to the incoming front of employee referral bonus, I think it just got about $2000 brighter out there. Luckily, I have my sunglasses with me. :)

flexagon,
What a beautiful day! I feel like I could sit outside for hours, run a
marathon, or change jobs on a day like today. I think I'll go for two
out of three.
Wait! Did I already miss the marathon?
