I was disappointed to look up egg donation in the most recent edition of Our Bodies, Ourselves and still find only a short (and negative) mention of it as a technique used by infertile couples.
What about the egg donors themselves?
Thousands of women donate eggs annually in the US alone, and it does not seem very like the Boston Women's Health Book Collective to deny them information and leave out their perspective. Yet, this is what is being done, edition after edition. As an egg donor and as a woman, I would like to understand the motivation behind this -- and also help with the correction in a later edition, if personal perspectives are needed.
I have chosen not to be a parent myself, and several years ago I found egg donation to be a perfect way to pass on some of who I am while enabling two wonderful friends of mine to have a child. I am in close touch with the family, and watching my biological child grow up is a source of joy in my life. I have friends for whom egg donation was less fulfilling than it was for me, because they do not know where the child is, and yes, I'm sure that some women have donated eggs and regretted it. Where are these other women and what are their stories? Where is my my story? Why have our voices been omitted?
