Music -- October Project
Jul. 30th, 2007 08:17 amOh yes, it's also music recommendation time: October Project. You want the first two albums they made in the early 90s, October Project and Falling Farther In. That's all they did before breaking up; three of them reunited much later under the same band name, but without their original lead singer, which kind of destroys the magic.
You can listen to the samples from both albums; I'm not sure whether they'll do the music justice or not. I only have the first, October Project, so that's what the rest of my raving will focus on. The lyrics are pretty basic melancholy/goth (though with a few especially good lines), the production quality is good, the percussion is clean, but the real winner here is the voice of Mary Fahl. I listened to the first song on this album a few times in dance class before buying the CD, and based on that song I thought she was a very expressive tenor... but no, wait, that's a woman! Um, wow. I haven't heard a voice so flat-out interesting since Neko Case, and before her Tori Amos. There's another woman who sings backup lyrics who blends with her the way Simon and Garfunkel used to blend together... they're very distinct voices, so that you can tell what line each is singing, but blending just gorgeously. So, in recognition of that, the songs on this album are really heavy on vocals. There are no instrumentals, and not much time where nobody is singing.

I'm also really enjoying Lullaby for Liquid Pig by Lisa Germano... it's slow, quiet, breathy and dreamy. I don't know if anyone who reads this would like it, but I think it's a good album to make out with![[livejournal.com profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/external/lj-userinfo.gif)
heisenbug to. As for Lisa herself... um, I don't think she was too happy while recording it. On the discography page of her site, it has this to say about Lullaby for Liquid Pig:
