I wanted to make a long, rambly post about how my interests seem to cycle over time. I've talked before about cycling through ambitious and non-ambitious phases, and I'm thinking it's all related. Also, the more I think about it, the more I think a lot of it is seasonal. Still, I don't think I'm going to succeed in rambling, given that this is probably just part of the human condition and everyone's already thought it out. :)

Here's my state of current interest faddishness.

Currently in: flexibility, workouts, sex & relationships*
Currently out: hardcore math/algorithms stuff, programming for fun, personal finance

Other interests that definitely cycle between "fascinating" and "meh": home fixup/organization, time management, writing, art, knitting, career direction angst, personal finance, nutrition... I think I probably cycle less than some people, and what I'm interested in definitely cycles faster than what I actually do (because I'm a stubborn creature of habit and I sign up for classes/commitments that often continue beyond where my natural interest-cycle ends. Plus, plenty of things are things I do like brushing my teeth, whether I'm especially interested or not). Probably the cycles make themselves most evident on weekends, when I'm most likely to be entertaining myself as I please, and especially at times like this when I have few extra commitments because I'm slacking as hard as I can.

* I had to explain to [livejournal.com profile] heisenbug that I occasionally get interested in such things even if there's no ongoing or developing trouble! And I read a book called How to Improve Your Marriage Without Talking About It, which was a win if only for the sentence "Male emotions are like a woman's clitoris: you can't be too direct too quickly." HA! And, actually, I also liked that it talked about proximity snuggling, which is the "I like to hang out near you, even if we're not talking" thing. The book said that men like to proximity snuggle and women often don't understand that; in our family we first noticed it (and named it) because of the cats, but we all do it.
