Gadgets and shoes
Aug. 14th, 2011 10:28 pmI have a Kindle now, mainly because I bought one for my dad and his wife -- it'll be a real boon to them, living as far away from real bookstores as they do, and they have asked me questions about Kindles before. My dad may be the Grinch -- no Christmas presents for him -- but he won't be able to turn down a Kindle presented in his own home, especially when it's not just for him. As for me, what do you think? I'm their expert on all things computeresque; I had to buy the same one so I can answer their inevitable questions about it. (I got a refurbished one for myself.) So far I'm quite enjoying the book I bought on it (The Drunkard's Walk), and I think I'll grow to enjoy the whole Kindle; every other minimalist out there seems to love theirs. It's certainly great (and amazing) to be able to get sample chapters of so many books, for free, within seconds. And it's certainly amazing (and dangerous) to be able to get the rest of those books, not for free, within seconds after devouring Chapter 1.
Overall, I was Virtuous this weekend... I took books to the Goodwill to get off my shelves, and winter pants to the tailor to be altered, and wrote email, and attacked the two piles of paper that had been getting a squinty look in their eyes lately. Applying for residential exemption on income tax is boring, but perhaps less tedious than paying extra taxes.
After some deliberation (see Kindle expenditure above) I also went to Fluevog to visit some of their new shoes. Twice. It was a tax-free weekend, after all. And I may have, in the end, well... hexagonal heels, oooh.

The entire Baroque family is off-the-charts steampunk fever-dream beautiful.
