Jan. 5th, 2012

As I put up a new calendar (and threw out the old one, and promptly lost all record of when I got my last period), I looked back at 2011, and I looked forward at my new Michael Sowa calendar. He paints gentle, surreal images just odd enough to make a person think twice, but not strange enough to alarm a person, and I'm pleased to have found him.

As for my 2011... it looks very good on paper. Leveling up at work, leveling up at the gym, moving into new condo and selling the old. I don't especially want every year to feel the way 2011 did, but then, it was officially a Big Year -- they never feel entirely good. And there was a highlight, the best thing, the sunbeam across the wooden floor of my year: the new home. It very nearly makes up for the desperation and helplessness of all the travel, which was the corresponding worst thing, and the thing I'm most determined to not repeat in 2012.

So now for my favorite new year's question: what was the most game-changing idea of 2011 for you?

Mine is about fitness, strength and handstands: a conglomeration of the teachings of Toledo. It's been five rather long months of following his progressions -- I now see straight-arm work as an absolutely vital part of strength training, I have a visceral feel for how much it can help to train twice a day, and I have a whole new approach to straddle flexibility. (Mmm. Leaning forward and feeling my chin touch the floor was another highlight of 2011, actually.)
