Pissy-form
Nov. 16th, 2013 08:32 pmIf you go here and move the sliders until only the bones are visible, you can see the pisiform -- it floats above the other wrist bones, entirely encased in a ligament. It's the protrusion of the pisiform, and the tendon reaching around it and down into the forearm, where I've been feeling bad pain during handstands for the last couple of months. It took me all too long to figure out that I have really tight forearm muscles attached to that, which are probably more to blame than my wrist/hand position really are.
What pissy form -- pulling on the tendon and joint until there's inflammation.
The Inconveniently Located Therapist thinks my pisiform has been pulled to a new position by all the tightness in my forearm; Dr.
bluechromis disagrees and feels it's just an anatomical variation. Either way, it's painful. I have been judged as weak in wrist extension and in ulnarflexion (if that's indeed what it's called then the wrist bends to move the hand toward the pinky side); I now have exercises for both these things. I don't care much about strengthening the weak stuff, but if the antagonist relaxation response causes the tight stuff to relax, then I'm all for it.
Oh, and the ILT also expressed surprise that I can do handstands at all on my not-so-mobile wrists. Not encouraging. But the fact remains that I can, and as long as I can, I will.
Ten days off didn't help. A week of 2x or 3x/day ibuprofen, and ice at night, has helped a lot. I sleep on my left side, with my right hand over a pillow, and on that pillow I put a cold pack wrapped in a dish towel... it's comfortable and I fall asleep, and I don't need to set aside icing-time during the day. I feel worry about this wrist injury -- have I encountered the thing that will someday make me stop doing handstands? Am I giving myself an ulcer with all the ibuprofen? -- but I hardly had any pain during last night's handbalancing class, so I am feeling cautiously optimistic.
