A zoning win, and a bit of climbing around
May. 1st, 2023 11:09 amOn Tuesday night I spent 2.5 hrs on a Zoom call with the appropriate town's Zoning Board of Appeals, with Perse, and together we got the special permit we needed to move forward with renting out our cottage. One of the agenda items before us got spicy, with people really caring about other people putting in parking behind a house. Then later in the week I ordered a stove and a fridge, using a corporate perk that lets me in to the secret GE appliance store (employee pricing). I discovered during the interminable meeting that I can just go to jigsawpuzzles.io and join one of the ongoing public puzzles for a perfectly decent fidget... hmm, might do that during future all-hands at work.
Speaking of which, my awesome new VP then up and quit. I think she announced on Weds and had a town hall on Thursday, and the resulting scramble for conference rooms is how I ended up in a room with Lioness and exchanged a few words. And, oh, if I didn't mention Lioness getting reorged into my wider org -- yeah, that happened a few weeks ago, which is why she was on the meeting invite for the same VP. Nothing bad happened, so that's a Rubicon crossed without fanfare. A mild positive. I also shot my shot with the new/old VP, asking if she'd like to stay in touch post-Google, and she said yes! SWEET. Nobody seems to blame her for leaving after six months; all the questions were for the SVP above her, asking him how we might restructure the role to not burn people out.
There was an awkward scramble to the end of the week, in which I had to put my foot down with a junior engineer in a way that I found unpleasant. But then my squirrel came back from two nights away in some cabin, and we got to go to the outdoor ropes/adventure course that we messed up the scheduling on two weeks ago. He only went on one course and that was enough for him, but then I got to blaze through the black diamond course without being stuck behind anyone else, and I did much better than last year because I remembered how things worked.
It's looking like a week of pretty constant demands, and a few things are okayyyyyy as in "not getting worse right now, maybe getting better, it's hard to tell".
