Break, etc

flexagon: Lucy from Peanuts builds a block tower but it falls. (fail)
Long weekend, short week, then regular weekend. Shall we?

  • Saturday I got stuff done, then went to Blue-Green Street to help clean up after the baby squirrel's birthday party, then saw Across the Spider-Verse with the bug. That was definitely overstimulating, but beautiful. So many frames from that movie are worthy of being sold as posters, and the animation was somehow a step ABOVE the last one. Weaker story, but technically a marvel... so to speak.

  • Went berry-picking on Monday with the squirrel, which we had wanted to do since successful apple-picking last year. We got raspberries (my long arms turned out to be very helpful), strawberries (so hot, so low to the ground) and blueberries (so smol, took forever). Summer things are now disrupting all my squirrel dates and I won't have one again for weeks, so it was nice to be able to do all that and still have time for some Devs and an overnight. Brought the blueberries home to the bug and cooked a pie the next day.

  • Then I was trying to be useful, and searching for a tape measure, when I finished off the weekend by BREAKING MY STUPID TOE. Yeah. I broke my stupid toe, when a thing of packing tape fell off the high bookshelf and fell with surgical precision on the very end of my fourth left one. The next day I went to the doctor and then hospital (for X-rays), and the morning after that I went to the podiatrist -- overall a pleasingly efficient process, which could only have been better if my PCP's office had had an X-ray machine. It's busted all right, and not a nice clean break, but I still just get tape and a "good luck" because there's nothing else to really do. In two more weeks I get X-rayed again to see if the bone is in a decent position as cartilage begins to form, and until then... I tape and limp.

  • The short work week was devoted almost entirely to work catch-up. I actually burned my email down to zero, briefly, on Monday night, and then focused largely on closing tabs -- this was inspired partly by reading Time Surfing, and loving the idea it promotes of not letting your environment turn into a to-do list. My tabs were definitely a to-do list and they still are. But by Friday night there were just 4 "do something with me" tabs in one window and eleven "read me" tabs in another, and right now it's 4 and 4 because I did a lot of reading over the weekend.

  • As for this weekend, I had a bit of a cold or something non-covid in my sinuses, but was able to mostly ignore it. Friday was dinner with the Monk and the bug, and then Saturday was seeing a really crazy concert that the bug was playing in. It involved Taylor Swift tribute, Lana del Rey tribute, pole dancing, burlesque and drag, and it ran late and today I'm sleepy.

Somewhere in there I spent a long time searching for the perfect pull-up bar, chin-up bar or similar thing to mount inside my home gym and hang from, since just dangling and letting my spine traction out is turning into a frequent self-care thing for me. Finally ordered a couple of monkey bars. This means digging around in our stupid ceiling, where the joists are evenly spaced at 16" but are well above where they can be detected with a stud finder. But the end result will let me and the bug both hang, and not use up any wall space, which seems good.

The upcoming week is going to be dominated by continued limping, and trying to get the rental cottage kitchen in order. Contractors are coming, early tomorrow morning even, while the squirrel family is gone (and they've gone someplace they aren't even supposed to use cell phones, argh) and so it's on me to shepherd that through. I'm a little nervous about it.

For the most part I feel pretty good? My hip has been hurting a whole lot less -- not really hurting, in fact -- which is a real relief. Handstands have been strong. And my brain is responding pretty well to my kick of reading all the non-fiction that's been waiting on my to-read shelf.
