[Two weeks] Growf! Growf! Growf!
Feb. 16th, 2025 09:43 pmI'm writing this in the middle of a long weekend (tomorrow's a company holiday) which will be the start of a longer vacation because I'm taking the week off. Ironically, there is plenty of work I hope to get done, but that's fine. All I want is to not spend the week talking to people about the year's plans as if I'm going to be around. Because that's what I did all through last week, and it was busy with no time to catch my breath. I had one meeting with a high-level person in which I got through to him in a way several people were counting on -- which would have been a victory if my heart were in it -- and then on Thursday there was a big reorganization a few levels above me, and I listened to the town hall but it just sounded like blah blah AI blah blah growth. I hate the word "growth" at this point. It sounds like a dog barking: "Growf! Growf! Growf!" and mother of stars, it is all these goobers talk about. In between layoffs, that is.
(Have I ever told you about the time I played Diplomacy with people at the office? I freaked out entirely about an in-game betrayal, lost a lot of sleep and made it very weird for everyone in the game -- and I won, after many weeks. Then I felt a very deep "welp, I'm glad I won and I sure never need to do that again", and so it is now with tech and the corporate world.)
Victory: getting taxes basically done. My refund won't be as big as I had calculated, which is actually a relief. There are few more numbers I'd like to double-check tomorrow before calling it final.
Corporate perk: an evening event for managers at a fancy small-plate restaurant, in which they had "cooking stations" for us to learn at. They were really more like assembly stations, but I did learn to make onigiri, and should be able to do that at home sometime with help from the H-Mart.
Weirdness: I had "coffee" with Lion, really basically just a meeting, and ... weird. I guess heartbreak + five years is an easy recipe for weirdness? Anyway, I'm going to make that its own post.
Fun: discovering, and playing, Dragonsweeper. Here's the review that got me started; if it appeals to you, it's just a simple puzzle game you can play for free in the browser.
Might do some more rambling later, but apparently just recalling what happened this week is exhausting enough for the moment because I just got tired. I have one load of laundry to fold, and then it's bedtime with the cozy book for me.
