black cat walking

One of my favorite things lately is taking our black cat Rafe out for walks -- everything exciting, everything big and fresh and unexplored. He is a blob of random motion on the end of a purple leash. I was so proud of him on Sunday when we went all the way to the neighbor's steps and then up them (though later he got under them, too, when I let go the leash for a moment and he darted cleverly behind a spiderweb and to freedom -- and this worried my poor
heisenbug, who saw me alone on the sidewalk and called from the window, did you lose my cat?). It is a lesson in going at someone else's pace, and seeing the world through small eyes. Reminds me, actually, of a chemical or two I've tried -- if you've ever tried the kind of chemical that lets you stare at small things for a while and be quite impressed and overwhelmed with the vastness of the world.
As his pace seeps into me -- go down a few steps, stop sit purr, pace left, pace right, sniff, continue down steps -- his range seems to expand toward mine. This time we went much farther than ever before, like stolid solemn explorers making journal notes of everything. Three neighbors away it really seemed he got the idea that if we went linearly down the street there would be this pattern of stairs every 50 feet or so. He just sniffed them and didn't have to go up to the porch.

Date: 2006-06-07 01:53 am (UTC)It is fun.... I've been having a crappy time of it lately, so I wanted to write about something peaceful that I could get a little writerly about. Can't wait to take him out again this weekend and see if he goes just as far. :)
