Weed donations gladly accepted

Whee, I'm back in Boston. Oregon was nice, though there were a lot of orb webs there. I took the redeye home last night and managed to sleep soundly all the way from SFO to BOS, which was near-ideal and reminded me why overnight flights really are a good option when flying west to east.
heisenbug stayed in Oregon for his grandfather's funeral, which we knew was coming but didn't know when, so I'm the one here in the heat wave... sweeping the floor, and brushing enough hot fur off the cats to knit a whole new cat, if only I knew how to knit.
The funniest thing we saw on the trip was a sign in
heisenbug's grandfather's nursing home's garden that said "Weed Donations Gladly Accepted". It had a down arrow pointing toward a garbage can. I understand they were encouraging gardening... and that maybe it was an inappropriate time and place to laugh hysterically at anything... BUT...! *splutter* We got pictures of each of us with the sign, as well as a shot of the sign alone, which I desperately want to send to the folks at Signspotting.
Today I had lunch with Dan the Cat and Big Daddy, then walked to Kendall with Big Daddy alone. It was good to get the Big Daddy perspective for the first time in six months -- I really miss his pragmatism. He feels I shouldn't bother maneuvering myself to be #2 in my group since I probably don't have the experience and pull to actually be leader when Dan leaves, but that I should continue my networking efforts and should simply be calm about one more year of Colubrid salary. He also puts his money on Silver Fox leaving quite soon (Silver Fox just found out his Politic Frog stock options are worthless, which is certainly worth quitting over if the fox has no love for Colubrid). I will surely be okay, but we both agree -- or rather, I think all three of us agree -- that there is some turbulence ahead.
Last but not least, I think I'm going to have to buy The Almond. Reviews can't agree on whether the book is bad or good, so it would seem it has its problems, but the cover picture is so erotic! Ooh. I want a poster of that.
