Draw yer triangle

When I was in 9th grade my English teacher (why my English teacher? but it was him) asked us to draw or think of a triangle, with the lengths representing how much our lives were made of physical, mental and spiritual components.

I asked what to do if I didn't even have a triangle. I thought my mental component was so much longer that the physical and spiritual sides could never come in and touch one another; I had a long line with a little flipper on each end. He gently suggested that my life might be a little out of balance, and I nodded and shrugged because I knew that, but couldn't imagine anything except living all in my head.

Now my physical side is probably as long as my mental side, and I like it that way. Got me a long, skinny pointy wedge. I still don't have much for spirituality but at least it's a triangle now. I'm almost tempted to write my old English teacher and tell him. :)

Yay! Bodies feel good, and working with them is actually very rewarding. It took me years to figure that out but it's true.

what about emotional? is that the same as spiritual or does it go with mental?

Yes it is. I still haven't figured out what "spiritual" really means so I don't know.

Maybe it should be a physical/logical/emotional triangle!

i like that better. in that triangle, i think i am, surprisingly, pretty equal. i'm probably more emotional than logical but i try really hard to be logical.

Emotional can be part of spiritual, but I think spiritual encompasses more than just emotions. The spiritual component of my life is small, but for me it means looking outside of yourself yet feeling that you are a part of this whole big world you see around you, in a way that can't be expressed with logic.

I wanted to say, the idea of one's life as a triangle, that you must balance these aspects of yourself in order to have a happy balanced life, is really cool and neat. A great thing to present to high schoolers, I think. :)

Yes. :) This teacher of mine was a good teacher, and not just for English.
