My new favorite tasteless joke:

A pedophile and a child are walking through the woods at night. It's windy and the trees are rustling. The child looks up and says "I'm scared." The pedophile says "You think you're scared! I have to walk back all alone!"

Annnnnd, to continue the theme of general tastelessness, apparently there is an abortion clinic a couple of buildings down from my physical therapist's new office (I hadn't walked by it before because last time I went 1/2 block too far on the T). Apparently there are folks who stand in front of it wearing sandwich boards that say "Face it, abortion kills." Apparently they approach passersby with pamphlets. Apparently, when the passerby is me and the mouth opens, what comes out is not "No thank you". Apparently, regardless of intent, what comes out is a lot more like "FUCK you, you stay away from my body." Sigh. I'm not sorry exactly, but that wasn't very creative or productive either.

Sounds about right to me.

This is the world's most hopeless argument, though. We begin with the premise that an embryo is not "a life." They believe it is. At that point, all constructive discussion ends.

My take is, they're harassing emotionally vulnerable people. They certainly aren't asking questions. It isn't any of their business why someone would have an abortion- be it lack of interest, finances, life-threatening medical conditions, known birth defects, sexual assault issues.... none of their business. And they are harassing people. They gave up the right to courtesy.

But they don't think the reasons something worth asking about. To THEM, it would be like if someone said to you that she killed her husband because she decided she didn't want to be married. You would argue that the thing to do is to let him live, get a divorce, but that it's not your right to kill him.

Mind you, I am in utter disagreement with them, because I don't think an embryo/fetus is a life until it is viable outside of the womb. But yet, I can bend my mind enough to understand their desperate desire to do what they see as being clearly "right," and why they are so motivated.

Au contraire - I'm fine with calling it a life. The bacteria in my gut and the mitochondria in my cells are also lives. (Yeah, they depend on me. I also depend on a steady flow of nutrients from outside sources. Whatever.)

I could list many reasons why those lives are not worth as much as an adult human life, and I have no problem ending such a life to preserve the quality of an adult human life.

Crazy women on the street, I just, errrrrggggghhh. Someone told me that some of them get paid to do that, which just kind of breaks my brain.

My thoughts exactly - if those people spent their time and energy working for kids and families who are already here, they could make a much more meaningful impact. Of course, they aren't really trying to make a meaningful impact, they're just hateful people. It's a hell of a lot easier for them to rant, criticize, and try to intimidate than it is to actually DO anything useful.

So yep, fuck 'em.
