Psychology Today had a quote last month that I think applies far beyond clothing:

Style is optimism made visible. It presumes that you are a person of interest, the world is a place of interest, and life is worth making the effort for.

Insert deep thoughts here.

Also, here's a picture of two huge pieces of construction equipment, knitting, in case your day hasn't been strange enough yet.

Me? I've been conscientious. I've been getting screwed over enough, I refuse to screw myself over even more by being inattentive to detail.

So? Were your hopes (and washer) ruthlessly crushed beneath the heel of cruel destiny, or was your optimism rewarded?

I totally agree with the psychology today quote - style extends far beyond clothing and truly is an expression of your values and interests.

Oh, that is so cute, though really I think it's often the ego that fails to cash the check. :)

The article (recycled now) went on to say how having style can even be the moral high ground -- consumption isn't on a whim or at the urging of marketers, but rather is personal and thoughtfully considered.

Hmm. I still think the visible-optimism part is more important.

As for values... sigh, I think I may be infested and in need of an exterminator. :P
