Him: Maybe we should just not give each other presents this year.
Me: I was the one who suggested that and you already didn't want to.
Him: Wasn't that to save money though?
Me: Only kind of.
(pause)
Me: Maybe we should each spend $100* on stuff for ourselves, wrap it up, put it under the tree... and to keep the element of surprise there, we could each open the other one's presents. And then give them to each other.
Him: That's not the worst idea I've heard. That's not even the worst idea I've heard today.

Ground rules to include: the gifts would still have to be "gifty" type things, the type of thing we'd like to receive rather than what we might buy on an ordinary day; and we'd still fill each other's stockings. I actually kind of like the idea, and not just because we'd both get things we wanted... I think it'd also be sort of romantic and fun to be excited for the other person while opening packages. We haven't decided though.
* This has been our usual budget for Xmas gifts, after one year when we spent really disparate amounts.
