Torture movies, board games, the usual
Aug. 30th, 2009 11:25 pmI did some reading on imdb.com about Hostel: Part II after reading an interview with the director about his movies and "torture porn". I read the synopsis, watched the previews, read the quotes, looked at the posters (one of which is basically just a closeup of untrimmed raw meat, eww) and watched some clips.
Rated R for sadistic scenes of torture and bloody violence, terror, nudity, sexual content, language and some drug content.
So, really... what does it take to get an X these days? If snuff films with "sadistic scenes of torture" get an R, and so do perfectly nice movies where people say "fuck" a few times in conversation, then movie ratings are worthless to me.
I cooperate at the gym with someone I don't know. That person keeps the thick blue mat, the one that is good for splits training, tucked away in an alcove that I assume most people don't know about. After a few weeks of hauling it out of there, I realized that I also benefit from keeping it in a slightly hidden place, and I started putting it back. Who is my conspirator? And why is there only one blue mat now instead of two?
I played Agricola for the first time last night, and I liked it, although it was a 5-player game with all beginner players and therefore took hours. Given the complexity of the game, it's also pretty notable that we were playing the simpler version... so, yikes. I'm not sure I'm even interested in the full version, and it's not something people will be able to play a quick game of at work over lunch.
I liked it, but I was up until 2 AM and slept until noon today (so much for getting laundry done in the morning). Those of you keeping track of my efforts to stay busy while
heisenbug is busy, behold my overachievement! He got home first last night, and also on Thursday when I went to Alegria.
The days are noticeably getting darker, something I just noticed about 10 days ago. It's dark now when some of my evening classes start, at 7:30. There's always a frisky, rebellious feeling the first few times of going out after dark, after a whole summer of being a good little mammal and living more in sync with the sun. I'll miss the light in the evenings, but I'm also looking forward to wearing my new sweaters. I like autumn a great deal.

Movies and shorter days
Date: 2009-08-31 10:27 am (UTC)Shorter days: I also noticed the days were getting shorter about three weeks ago. I usually get up at about 6 - all summer the sun was up before I was, even if I went to the gym (which necessitates getting up at 5:30). Now it's twilight at 6. I imagine we did not notice this even earlier because of all the cloudiness/rain we've been having?
Still thinking about my list. :D
