The first time I had a room all to myself was in junior year of college. It was 11 feet by 11 feet square, with two windows that were both on one wall.

In that room, the only things on the floor were a futon, my desk, my chair and my stereo. Oh, and a small plastic trash can that I still have.

On the wall I had a smallish full-length mirror, and I think a little whip I hung over the desk for fun. Holey curtains -- just fabric tacked over the windows -- let in a lot of light. The room was white, but I painted the trim "loch ness", which was a lovely grey/blue/green muddy color.

The room had a good-sized closet, in which I had some milkcrate-and-board shelving that held all my books and clothes. Sometimes the closet would be open and there'd be a book-pile and a clothes-pile on the floor... but every Saturday morning it all went back in the closet, and I'd close its door, and wash the floor with Murphy's oil soap and then I'd sit there just loving my room to pieces.

I don't think there's a feasible way back to that level of minimalism now that I have a family, but I've been craving it lately. Of all the spaces we have now, the bedroom is the one that could come the closest if we wanted it to.

I actually don't see why you couldn't reduce your level of possessions to a small size still (even with a family.)

It sounds lovely (the room.)
