I spent the weekend at [livejournal.com profile] apfelsingail's place. I got to meet her new house and help obsess over furniture placement (even do some furniture placement), and we hung up artwork, and it was very domestic and fun and I learned about the wonders of steam mops.

We saw an incredible number of beautiful things in the span of two days. First, the Dogwood Festival in Atlanta... an art fair bigger than I've ever been to, with many lovely things both in my price range and out of it. Do you wonder how an aspiring minimalist handles a hugely tempting art fair? Well, this one spent her way around the park -- I haven't had such an expensive treasure hunt since Venice in 2003. Most of it went for one large print that will replace the Dali in our living room, and some of them were for gifts, but it still felt like a bit of a minimalism fail.

Then the next day I got to see an IKEA store in person for the first time. Nice. I'm kind of in love with their Expedit series -- doesn't matter that I'm having contractors build me some custom cube-things this very week, to see them is to want them. They have so many cute little modular inserts. Anyway, I walked through there with arms firmly crossed and bought NOTHING, so ha.

Did I say contractors? Oh yes. On Thursday I got the last piece of wood I needed from Home Despot, and my elusive carpenters materialized within hours and asked for money. They're showing up tomorrow at 8AM to begin doing dusty, noisy things. I wish I were at home right now so I could obsess about final design details and take "before" pictures.

Steam mops are AWESOME. Like a mop but faster and better and it steams your floor and dries almost immediately. You need to be a little careful on hardwoods since it can sometimes to Bad Things to polyurethane, but it does nice things to linoleum and anything tile. I love love love mine. It has a little felt pad so you can SEE all the crap you are mopping up. It's kind of like an iron, I guess. But for floors. I've mopped more in the last two weeks than the rest of my life. At some point I assume the novelty will wear off, but I'm enjoying it.
