Reminder: it's time to start re-reading The Name of the Wind now, so that you'll be ready when the sequel comes out on March 1.

(If you don't know what I mean and have ever liked ANY fantasy book, ever, then by all means start reading it for the first time. It's been a long wait for the sequel, which is good for you since it means the first one's been available in mass market paperback for years now. )

Well -- yes, it is that good, but I feel really shy/cautious about recommending fiction to you because, well, have our tastes ever overlapped much? This has a male main character and a ton of pretty standard fantasy tropes (done incredibly well). It's intricately plotted rather than dreamy, and it's pretty long.

If you let me know what other fantasy you like, I'll be able to say if there's any similarity with this. But to get back to the shy/cautious part, I'm not aware you read much of any SF/fantasy/horror.

haha. very true. the fantasy i like is mostly for kids. diana wynne jones, philip pullman. i liked garth nix's abhorsen trilogy.

ok -- that does give us some overlap, as I like a lot of YA stuff myself. There's a solid chance you'd like this, if you liked His Dark Materials. :)

I keep reminding myself to get around to reading Nix sometime.

I just found/read The Name of the Wind, I'm happy to only have a short wait for book 2. :)
