This week overall was filled with unexpected cancellations, a truly silly number of consecutive dinners gotten with Lion since we were both unusually free, and unanticipated new things happening.

In particular, I was supposed to ride in a hot-air balloon with [personal profile] norwoodbridge on Wednesday, and we had a whole plan with a hotel and a sunrise flight. The balloon operator though, after something like 30 years of safe flying, crashed the balloon last week and it was therefore unavailable to us. We recovered well, I think, delaying the overnight to next week (hey Lion, it appears I'm free for dinner again, what are you up to?) and reserving seats on a whale watching cruise instead.

Such a nice day on the water! We talked about lots of things, and saw some whales pretty close up. They engaged in a behavior I'd never heard of before and I guess is fairly rare: slapping their side fins on the surface to make a loud report. The captain of the boat was thrilled. These two whales hung out and slapped at us for about ten minutes, first vigorously (lifting both fins at once, like wings) and then lazily (raising one fin up as they rolled on their side, then ponderously slapping down). We wanted to slap or splash back at them -- were they flirting with us!? -- but there was no way to do that. I took him to a late lunch at Alive & Kicking Lobsters instead, which I'd been wanting to do for weeks.

I finished a poem, a draft of which made it here, and worked on the next writing exercise from Steering the Craft, and made it outside today for about 90 minutes of Pokemon Go raids (there was a special 3-hr event, and the square where I live was swarming with players). For my final random trick, I'm going to a Janelle Monae concert tonight; a concert I didn't even know existed, with a friend from circus school who is also in my summer intensive and had an extra ticket. So unexpectedly cool. I finally listened to Dirty Computer today just to be prepared.

What did you think of Dirty Computer? I had several friends at the show, all of whom raved about it.
