This week overall was filled with unexpected cancellations, a truly silly number of consecutive dinners gotten with Lion since we were both unusually free, and unanticipated new things happening.
In particular, I was supposed to ride in a hot-air balloon with
norwoodbridge on Wednesday, and we had a whole plan with a hotel and a sunrise flight. The balloon operator though, after something like 30 years of safe flying, crashed the balloon last week and it was therefore unavailable to us. We recovered well, I think, delaying the overnight to next week (hey Lion, it appears I'm free for dinner again, what are you up to?) and reserving seats on a whale watching cruise instead.
Such a nice day on the water! We talked about lots of things, and saw some whales pretty close up. They engaged in a behavior I'd never heard of before and I guess is fairly rare: slapping their side fins on the surface to make a loud report. The captain of the boat was thrilled. These two whales hung out and slapped at us for about ten minutes, first vigorously (lifting both fins at once, like wings) and then lazily (raising one fin up as they rolled on their side, then ponderously slapping down). We wanted to slap or splash back at them -- were they flirting with us!? -- but there was no way to do that. I took him to a late lunch at Alive & Kicking Lobsters instead, which I'd been wanting to do for weeks.
I finished a poem, a draft of which made it here, and worked on the next writing exercise from Steering the Craft, and made it outside today for about 90 minutes of Pokemon Go raids (there was a special 3-hr event, and the square where I live was swarming with players). For my final random trick, I'm going to a Janelle Monae concert tonight; a concert I didn't even know existed, with a friend from circus school who is also in my summer intensive and had an extra ticket. So unexpectedly cool. I finally listened to Dirty Computer today just to be prepared.

Date: 2018-07-24 01:56 am (UTC)Janelle Monae is the best and she is also so tiny! She is like 4'11". Half my friends are blathering about her concert on Dreamwidth so I feel silly doing the same, but it was really good, despite my being a little cold and dancing mostly to keep warm. Super high-energy, with a tight band and great dancing and emoting to go along with the amazing singing. She did almost everything on the new album (Dirty Computer), along with my two favorites from The Archandroid. She did it without showing an inch of skin -- she wears almost entirely suits, favoring tuxedo-like things and, for this show, mostly black and white and red -- and even I, who am pro-skank when it comes to clothing, can see how this is a demonstration of power in the music biz. She got political and she got caring. Told us to take care of ourselves, to take mental health seriously, to fight for the rights of everyone; made a heart out of her hands, which the crowd returned.
She did not hand out the 10 Droid Commandments, as I hear she has done at some other concerts, but I tracked them down for your amusement and mine. These are my favorites:
9. By show’s end you must transform. This includes but is not limited to eye color, perspective, mood, or height.
10. Lastly, please be aware that children conceived during the show or within 48 hours thereafter may be born with wings. The Wondaland Arts Society will not be held liable for this phenomenon or be held responsible for parenting or providing for your flying children.
Hee hee. :-)
No T-shirt or sweatpants because they'd sold out of all the merch in my size before I got to the line, but, oh well. Memories, and running into a lot of people I knew, and making better friends with up-and-coming baby base G, will have to do.
