A fairly mighty week, brought on by the Leaving of the Houseguests and End of the Holidays combined with only having four weeks remaining of my leave from work. I want to go back with as little hanging over my head as possible. After the Christmas un-decorating and doing of all the extra linens I just kind of kept going. I got rid of many cardboard boxes that we'd been keeping for gift-giving someday, and extra blankets (if we didn't use them when we had two houseguests in the middle of winter, we weren't ever gonna use them). I made a list called "I oughta..." for house things, and ended up painting some baseboards and moving some art as well as deep-cleaning such glamorous places as underneath the kitchen sink, and the front bathroom's vanity, and that one weird little kitchen nook where we keep all the bags. Rearranged some storage. Finished all my year-end rituals.

Maybe the best part was realizing I could toss most of my period supplies. But overall it was great to attack that Oughta stuff without the usual friction of work and weekend chores. It takes years for that kind of thing to get bad, which means that working on it will have positive effects that last for years too! But such a state can't last forever; the normal stuff asserted itself (and I ran lip balm through with my laundry, the bug needed a haircut, the coffee maker demanded descaling) and I fell back out of that mode.

My squirrel and I went ice skating on our weekend date, and it turns out that the squirrel used to skate too! Hockey-style, to my ex-figure-skating ways. I had fun watching him rediscover his ice feet, as I rediscovered mine. The rink was too crowded for any kind of real speed or tricks, but that's okay. He wants to skate again -- his low center of mass and strong legs both really work for him on the ice. And my ankle tendon didn't bug me at all, for once, so I'm up for it. I'd love to get all my crossovers back. Oh! And speaking of that date, I "did bedtime" for the baby squirrel for the first time. This proves to be easy: you sit and read, and the baby squirrel leans against you and also reads for a few minutes. It is utterly adorable that I was chosen for this, even though I know it was largely for the novelty. Like having a kitten settle on me.

There was also some community work this week; nothing awful, just getting out a metaphorical shovel and digging the direct pathway for some communication, after seeing it meander around like a confused river. (Yes, in the world of emotional labor I am a ditch-digger. It's honest work.)

Lastly, I'm low-key obsessed with The Lighthouse from Halsey's last album. It took some careful reading and discussion of the lyrics to realize that yes, it really is a killer mermaid song! That and Speaking With Trees from Tori Amos's latest are starting to break me out of the musical rut I've been in.

Yay getting house stuff done, and also yay ice skating - and yay for having someone who also has past skating experience to go with! I'm generally game to go skating with beginners, but yeah, it's nicer with someone who doesn't have to hold onto the rail.
