This week was mostly about scrambling around adjusting to the reorg; I met with managers about my new direct reports, and my direct reports about maybe becoming indirect reports, and my boss about what to do for his boss (the new VP). And then on Friday I got back from handstands to find a few "uh, check your email" chats... and it seems that this new VP, the one who's been with us for just four months, is "no longer with the company" in some kind of way so sudden that he couldn't say bye, and his manager (SVP, my hyperboss) didn't even say anything nice about him on the way out. Just: he's gone. I really don't know where to expect to see the guy show up next: at another big tech company? In jail? Anyway, that's the second VP in a row to not last even half a year after taking a job managing my org. And it's funny because he was strongly in favor of my thinking, really liked me, and was planning to do a lot of things I've been waiting for an exec to do. Just on Thursday night, when talking to the bug, I was all "what if I'm having a good time next spring and don't want to quit? A lot of things are lining up so well right now"... and then on Friday, womp womp. So the corporate ride continues to call for a strong stomach.

Other things:

  • An old friend of the bug's came to visit, which was nice, and we'll be seeing him again tomorrow (with bonus spouse!) as he passes through town again going the other way.

  • I did a "deload" week of handstands, which means all my usual workouts for my coach but at about 1/3 volume. Feels nice to be less physically tired than I'd been getting.

  • I used mornings to keep chipping away at chore-type tasks that had been getting ignored: ordered new contacts/glasses, and (bigger) drove my sewing machine to the repair place for fixing. I had ignored my personal website for so long that I couldn't figure out how to get my updated resume onto it, and this instigated significant yak shaving, but I eventually succeeded. Now that I have a working FTP client set up, I could in theory work on updating the whole thing so that it doesn't look like it's from 2001... but that sounds like a project for next year.

  • Gymnastics: women's vault was as uplifting and joyful as the team finals and the all-around. Nobody who medaled messed up -- everyone got to show what they had, and it all fell out in order of difficulty and exactly as I'd personally hoped for. I wasn't able to watch uneven bars in real time this morning, but I caught the winning routines on YT, and if you only have 60 seconds for the Olympics this year you should watch this.

  • Speaking of the social emotions, which we were last week, it's EXTREMELY rare for me to feel as happy for someone I've never met as I feel for Simone Biles right now. Affective empathy for once!

  • Good times with partners. Playing the new 3D version of Riven with the bug, and walking around Jamaica Pond with the squirrel after dinner at a Scottish place out there.

  • I hurt my toe at open studio today, and it took a while to start hurting so I think there's some hope it's just jammed, not broken. I have buddy-taped it and now I limp around.

Looks like a busy week with lots of rain in the forecast... and I'm off to bed, to increase my chance of getting up for the women's beam event.

Sorry to hear about VP disappearance. I was at a company for a minute with a string of CEOs disappearing similarly. Discovered non-competes and criminal records. ha. Also crossed my mind that they could have passed. Who would know? Either way, may the replacement be as in your favor as the disappeared one.

I had to look up Yak Shaving, and lolled! I never had a good term for this before, but such a relevant thing!
