Mostly a lot better. Mostly.
Mar. 29th, 2026 08:58 pmSpent most of the week on house stuff, and about halfway through the week it all started feeling real again. I guess I warned you about the plumbing; now I've replaced the drain assemblies in both our bathrooms. No more gunked-up mechanisms where you pull a rod up to lower the drain; now the drains pop up and down with the press of a finger, and are simpler. I replaced an under-sink shutoff valve too. At the same time the house sprang a leak around the 2nd floor, which was extra exciting, and we started getting quotes on better insulation because our HVAC system is struggling and the cost of natural gas just might be insane this winter. (You know, to better match our stupid president). Caltrop, the young cat, absolutely hated the visiting contractors and hid from them with all her might.
I bleached my funny little hair tuft, and now it's a gradient from platinum blonde to pink. Not what I was planning, but it's kind of cute. And kind of nice to not be taking it too seriously. The little tuft is for playing with.
Financially, I sold the last of my Zillian stock this week. Having found it while filing taxes, I didn't mean to hold it any longer than it took to pay long-term capital gains tax, and a year was up on Wednesday. Still waiting for the cash to land in my bank account. Once it lands, I'm planning a couple of purchases but then keeping the rest as emergency padding.
Politics: I attended No Kings, which was a cold day here in Boston and I was mostly just cold and lonely for a couple of hours. I also emailed back and forth with the town about working for the mid-term elections, and they say I'd have to start as a poll worker. I'd been hoping to do more of a several-week position, but this way I have more time to take partisan action as well. Time to find some way to volunteer.
Social: managed to introduce the squirrel to more of my friends, and am working on a new introduction for the squirrel child too. Hurray! We also had a downer of a talk that has left me feeling pretty bad, but I have no clean summary of that talk so it's all just down to "change is hard" with a large side order of "change is hard on relationships". Just standard human stuff.
Next week will be busier, mostly in good ways. I'm especially looking forward to helping
apfelsingail unpack at her new place after a much needed move. And to the predicted warmer weather on Tuesday and Wednesday; I think going outside this week is a very good idea.
