Aerial silks
Jan. 23rd, 2006 11:31 pmI attended an awesome aerial silks practice session tonight as
dilletante's guest. Yay, thanks
dilletante! I could get to like these "hi, nice to meet you, let's trade workouts" relationships, I really could.
I'm sure you're curious, so: silks are amazingly cool, and seem like a ton of fun based on what I could see and do. You do need enough strength to get started, and 3-4 people tonight didn't... there wasn't much they could do but go home. I had no trouble hoisting myself upside down though (I'm sure you didn't doubt me) and proceeding to flail. Even better, I liked all the people I met, a lot. Circus people are a lot like theater people in some ways, except that they're doing something cool instead of just putting on stupid plays. Don't say that at my house, though -- I just did, and HLM put a clothespin on my ear! Ow, ow! Well, I suppose it was a bit mean.
Like any gymnastics-y thing, this was quite hard on the hands. My hands are dry now, and sore. But it's not as hard on them as parallel bars or a trapeze. I'm not sure what muscles it was hard on, aside from back muscles, but I assume my body will let me know all about it tomorrow.
I have a ton of images going through my head now. It's just so much fun to see amateur work when what you're used to is, basically, pro-level or nothing. It was fabulous to see real people doing everything ranging from simple to insane, and working on things they could almost do but not quite. Really, that sort of thing is far more inspiring to me than watching something like Cirque du Soleil where the skill levels shown are so high that you can't reasonably aspire to them. And as far as inspiring goes, did I mention the girl with disabled feet but strong arms? It turns out you can do a lot on aerial silks with primarily upper-body skills. Neat.
This group has a 3-hr open practice session every Monday night. It's the worst possible day for me (my rest day, and despite appearances, I do like to see my husband sometimes), but it's SO CLOSE. And so cool. And so accessible! Goddamnit. I'm definitely up for going again, I'm just not sure when. And by the way,
apfelsingail, I'm pretty positive you'd have loved this, so consider going along with me next time. :)
And now perhaps I'm wound down enough to consider going to sleep. Zzzzzz.
