There's a carpenter over here building two new closets into the heart of our condo. My feelings on this are pretty much as I knew they would be: I look at the new closet-box from the side of the cruelly imposed-on living room and I think "Aaah! I have spoiled the living room! Worst thing ever!". Then I walk to the other side where the doors are, look into the closets and think "Oooh la la, a generous helping of storage space. Paradise."
Sigh. I think that when all is puttied and painted I will like the look of the new wall. We've always been short on wall space too, and so a large, new, blank wall is in itself a lovely thing. We've managed to leave a rather odd little niche in the corner of the living room, and I like this less well than I thought I would; but it's just big enough to stuff my desk into if I decide I want to work in a niche. More likely we'll just use it as a nice out-of-the-way place to put HLM's cello... or the cats' food dishes... and whatever mildly ugly things we put on the L-shaped shelves we're going to run across one wall and into the niche. One thing that remodeling has taught me is that ideas evolve and percolate. Probably the niche will be quite handy somehow. And it will be easy for a future owner to turn it into yet another closet if they don't like it.
We are also getting a giant new CD rack (for HLM, and I get his as a hand-me-down) and we got a much nicer, larger thing to hang coats on in the hall. HLM is getting some new/different/smaller/bigger stuff for his office as well. Storage storage revolution!!! I suppose those things are less exciting though...... well, for you. :)
