The rest of the weekend was taken up by events related to Y's wedding. Well, first we saw The Station Agent, a funky little indie film, at a funky little $3 theater, and I really really liked it. And I got to meet the last of HLM's aunts, with whom I got along nicely.

Then the wedding, in which I was a bridesmaid... I don't even know where to start with Y and her hunky catch SM, they are so incredibly good together and they just exude such an amazing blend of talent and joy and joy-in-motion and general goodwill, it's just insane. Yes, I know I haven't seen them together in the bad times, but it's still hard to conceive of a nicer couple or a more beautiful bride. I had my little moments of tearfulness: first when a really gorgeous Catholic song was sung during the ceremony and the groom was crying unabashedly while Y wiped the tears from his face... the chorus was something like Cling fast to wisdom, for she will protect you; and if you cherish her, she will keep you safe. Waaaah. And then later, during the reception, after Y and SM had ravished the floor with some ridiculously competent dance (you have to know they were something like 6th in the national ballroom competition a couple of years ago, so they're damn good), SM did the mother-son dance with his mother. She clearly couldn't dance and was uncomfortable, and he just held her close and swayed back and forth with her, not minding that he wasn't getting to show off in front of the crowd. Toward the end he twirled her once or twice, then just swayed again... you might've had to see it to know what I mean, but it was a true display of kindness, just the kind I want my friends to have near them for the rest of their lives. I was quite impressed.

Later in the reception we bridesmaids did a rather spicy dance we'd spent the last 2 days choreographing and practicing, and after that (well, after telling HLM that he could maybe have a private dance later) I actually stayed on the dance floor to shake my booty for a while. I dunno how I did, but nobody laughed, and the exercise probably contributed a lot to how well I slept on both of the planes last night (we left from the reception and went straight to the airport for a redeye).

As a sidenote, both of us did a pretty good job of driving in the unfamiliar city we found ourselves in, despite some truly abysmal navigation on both our parts. And don't ever rent from Alamo, because they lie and their website doesn't add on all the charges they add on at the desk. And the cell phone proved invaluable, as we knew it would... there's no going back, no, not ever again.
