"Careen" and "career" are so suspiciously similar that tonight, thinking that perhaps "career" could mean "to bounce off a wall" (it doesn't) I looked them both up. The results were amusing. Let's call both words something else for the moment, just for the sake of being able to use them in examples... careet will do.

One of these words can mean:

1) To lurch or swerve while in motion.
2) To rush headlong or carelessly: “He careeted through foreign territories on a desperate kind of blitz” (Anne Tyler).

The other can mean:

1) A path or course, as of the sun through the heavens.
2) Speed: “My hasting days fly on with full careet” (John Milton).

Be honest now... which one better describes the progress of YOUR professional life thus far?

If, like me, you have no particular course, as of the sun through the heavens, and find yourself lurching and swerving in an occasionally headstrong way, well... here's wishing you a long and prosperous careen. ^_^
