flexagon, killer of thistles

So, we have this neighbor who doesn't take care of her place terribly well, and on whose lawn (right next to the sidewalk) there were these two tremendously huge thistles. And by tremendously huge, I mean about 7 feet tall. They were just barely starting to go to seed, and I was starting to worry there'd be thistles all over the neighborhood if someone didn't do something. Now, I don't like thistles -- I grew up around a lot of them, and fell in patches of them way too many times -- and was entertaining fantasies of a midnight strike in which HLM and I cut them down and dragged them away, especially after I had a bad dream last night about thistles (the first of those I can ever remember having, but okay).
Well, HLM thought I should play nice by asking permission to cut the thistles, so I did. The woman who answered the door now thinks I'm completely barmy, I'm sure. I was like hi... I noticed you had these two really big thistles... I'm a neighbor, and my husband and I will cut them down and take them away if you'll, um, let us.
You want them? she said. Then she said yes. I guess her lawn guy is allergic to thistles and that's why he didn't take them away before.
The funny part is that when we had the thistles down and were on the sidewalk cutting them up to put into a lawn bag, a guy across the street came out on his balcony and said uh, guys? do you know those people?. Er, no, but we asked permission. What kind of... awful person... would think about cutting down someone's weeds without even asking? Oh right, I would. But we didn't, so we're nice, see??? Then the guy invited us to come have some wine when we were done. We said no, then changed our minds about halfway through thistle #2 and went over to say hi. So that was two neighbors I met today under strange conditions. The guy was part of a couple with a 3-week-old baby so I don't expect we'll see a ton of them, but we did exchange personal cards (or, he and HLM did, reminding me to get my butt back to Vistaprint and finish making mine!).

Date: 2006-07-29 10:01 pm (UTC)Hey, I tried to call you but you weren't there -- wanted to mention that my boss offered to move me down to Atlanta yesterday. However, I told him NO. We'll see if the assignment he and I were talking about (working with a team in Atlanta) actually lands on me to any degree... for professional reasons only, I am probably going to resist it even if I can still work remotely from here, but the thought of being able to see you on business trips is rather tempting regardless.
